Ma'anar ƙamus na kalmar "cognac" wani nau'i ne na brandy mai inganci wanda aka samar a yankin Cognac na Faransa. Ana yin Cognac ta hanyar distilling giya da kuma tsufa a cikin ganga itacen oak na shekaru da yawa. Yawanci ana yi masa hidima azaman narkewa kuma galibi ana ɗaukarsa a matsayin kayan alatu saboda tsayin daka da tsarin samar da shi. Kalmar "cognac" kuma a wasu lokuta ana amfani da ita gabaɗaya don nufin kowane nau'in brandy da aka yi daidai da Cognac, ba tare da la'akari da asalinsa ba.
